Unpivoting Data

Unpivoting data is a problem we can encounter when shaping data. Data is often distorted in one way or another. One daunting problem is data that’s already pivoted, like in the example below.

We always want to get our data to tabular form, like in the example below.

While unpivoting data in Excel can be trying task even for experienced use, Power Query makes unpivoting data easy with one-click solution.

Unpivoting: example

Let’s look at unpivoting of the table below. We take the next steps.

Select the column that will stay in it’s place. In this example it’s column Platform.

Select Transform > Unpivot Columns.

We get unpivoted table.

We edit the table: we move date field to the left, change data type to date and rename it.
