Rules cover shapes and colors for all report elements like charts, tables, schemes and labels. Let&#8217;s look at how we correctly visualize data.<\/p>\n<h1>Chart orientation<\/h1>\n<p>Orientation depends on data type. We use the following rules.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use line or column chart for time series.<\/li>\n<li>Use bar chart for categorical data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If possible, we avoid pie charts. We only use them if the number of categories is small (for example 2 or 3).<\/p>\n<h1>Scenarios<\/h1>\n<p>We usually show different scenarios: Actual (AC), Forecast (FC), Plan (PL) and Past (PY). They are often crucial part of the business report. We use the following notations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u0394PY, difference between AC and previous year PY<\/li>\n<li>\u0394PL, difference between AC and plan PL<\/li>\n<li>\u0394FC, difference between AC and forecast FC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Variances are given in absolute or relative numbers. We use the following rules.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We use the <strong>same colors <\/strong>for variances on all charts, usually green for positive and red for negative variance.<\/li>\n<li>On charts we include the <strong>number value<\/strong> <strong>for every variance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>When we&#8217;re interested in variances only, we use \u00bb<strong>plus-minus\u00ab charts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"758\" height=\"265\" class=\"wp-image-1512\" src=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-31.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-31.png 758w, https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-31-300x105.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 758px) 100vw, 758px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When we&#8217;re interested in variances versus the actual values, we use <strong>integrated variances<\/strong> chart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"759\" height=\"387\" class=\"wp-image-1513\" src=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-32.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-32.png 759w, https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-32-300x153.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Relative values<\/h1>\n<p>When we&#8217;re interested in an overview of relative values (for example, how many of each product was sold in the region), we use detailed view of column or bar charts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For showing element size, we use <strong>stacked column chart<\/strong> or <strong>stacked bar chart<\/strong>. We provide number value for each element.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"879\" height=\"476\" class=\"wp-image-1514\" src=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-33.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-33.png 879w, https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-33-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/word-image-33-768x416.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 879px) 100vw, 879px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Titles, text and labels<\/h1>\n<p>Text and number labels usually play a smaller part in a business report. We use the following rules.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We <strong>title<\/strong> pages, charts and tables. We name the <strong>organization<\/strong> and <strong>department<\/strong>, <strong>KPI<\/strong> and <strong>time period<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Reports have their <strong>message<\/strong>. We summarize the message of the page on the top of every page.<\/li>\n<li>We name categories in charts. We avoid text labels on chart axes. We avoid gridlines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Scales and comparisons<\/h1>\n<p>We usually include multiple charts in one report. We make sure to use the same scale through all charts. This way we can quickly compare data. We use the following rules.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the same units we use the <strong>same scale<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>We <strong>don&#8217;t cut axes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>We provide <strong>number values<\/strong> in charts where necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Indicators<\/h1>\n<p>For highlighting data we use <strong>unified indicators<\/strong>, for example a highlighting ellipse, trend arrows, difference markers and similar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"669\" class=\"wp-image-1515\" src=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/un-5-1.png\" alt=\"un-5-1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/un-5-1.png 1400w, https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/un-5-1-300x143.png 300w, https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/un-5-1-1024x489.png 1024w, https:\/\/bi.unija.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/un-5-1-768x367.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Zebra BI Charts<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Zebra BI Charts <\/strong>is a visualization for Power BI that follows the IBCS rules. We no longer need to format our charts, it&#8217;s done by visualization. We select the values we want to show (usually AC, PL, PY and FC), Zebra compiles the charts and offers them for display.<\/p>\n<p>Zebra BI can be found on Marketplace in Power BI Desktop. It&#8217;s available in free and paid version, which offers additional functionalities.
